New Year’s resolutions are often made only to be broken mid year, or even before that. But for your own good (and for the sake of your own body), let 2018 be the year of actually keeping them. While the odds of sticking to most resolutions are slim to none, changing our old beauty habits is something we can all get on board with— especially when you’re a 26-year-old who’s finally realizing that growing old (and looking older) isn’t as much fun anymore.
From putting on sunblock even when it’s raining outside to finally tossing your expired makeup products, here’s your guide to a new year, new you.
1. Double cleanse at night.
Leave your lazy self in 2017 and start giving your skin a proper cleanse especially at night. Remove makeup with micellar water or a cleansing oil, then wash your face with a liquid cleanser to take off any more dirt and residue.
2. Exfoliate regularly.
Apricot Oil Scrub, Php399, St. Ives
Exfoliating is something everyone forgets but it’s necessary to do it about 3 times a week to remove dead skin, brighten up complexion, and prevent pesky blackheads.
3. Clean your makeup brushes at least twice a month.
Brush Cleanser, Php705, MAC
We can’t even imagine how much bacteria one dirty makeup brush has. If you’ve been complaining about constant breakouts, then it’s time you start cleaning your makeup brushes as often as you can.
4. Never forget to wear sunblock.
UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+, Php445, Biore
If there’s one thing to add to your skincare routine, it’s sunblock. Even when it’s cloudy outside, always make it a point to wear sunscreen. If it makes things easier, at least look for a moisturizer or foundation that contains SPF.
5. Maximize your beauty sleep.
This one’s a no-brainer. Trade in an hour of scrolling through social media for an hour of sleep and you’ll wake up feeling (and looking) better.
6. Invest on the best skincare products.
Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate, Php3675, Kiehl’s
Stop hoarding makeup products you don’t need and start investing on building a skincare routine that works for you. Do you really need 5 highlighting palettes? What you do need is a brightening and anti-aging serum your 45-year-old self will thank you for.
7. Declutter your beauty kit.
And start throwing away the lipsticks you’ve had since college. Make it a habit to clean up your dresser by making space for the products you often use and tossing away the ones you wear once a month.
8. Drink more, and more water.
You’ve probably heard this health tip a million times but if you want healthy, glowing skin, then it’s time to boost your water intake. For motivation, always bring a bottle in your bag and keep it on your desk during working hours.
9. Minimize your use of hot tools for your hair.
Keratin Smooth Heat Activated Treatment, Php450, Tresemmé
Frequent blow drying or ironing your hair can take a huge toll on your tresses. Try to use it twice a week at most. And when you do, don’t forget to protect your hair with heat protectant products to keep it from becoming dry and damaged.
10. Target your hair concerns with the right products.
If you’ve recently colored your hair, protect and treat your new ‘do with sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners that will not only keep it healthy, but will also prolong the color of your hair.
