High Flyer featuring Joshua Garcia

He may have already mounted award-winning acting performances on the big screen and have won our hearts as one-half of arguably the hottest love team of the year, but Joshua Garcia believes there’s still a long way to go. The charismatic young actor first debuted in Pinoy Big Brother: All In where he showcased his genuinely cool and nonchalant nature. A little over three years later, it seems as if Joshua is all groomed and set to become one of the promising leading men of today’s generation.

Acting seems as though it’s second nature to the 20-year-old. His compelling performance in Vince & Kath & James was quickly followed by another commendable portrayal of a cancer-ridden teen named Caloy in Love You to the Stars and Back alongside on-screen partner Julia Barretto. Now, Joshua takes on a more challenging role in the new mystery-drama series The Good Son where he plays the part of illegitimate son Joseph Reyes. Joshua’s growing portfolio of impressive roles is a testament to the roaring potential he’s capable of throwing on the table. Beyond a seemingly innate capacity to wow his spectators, Joshua shows that he’s determined to put in the work needed to thrive in his chosen craft. “Baka hindi ko sila mapa-bilib sa performance ko—that’s the challenge for me.

With his ability to transform challenges into a stimulus for growth, Joshua epitomizes the new breed of unadulterated talent in local show business. But besides his remarkable proficiency in acting, Joshua’s laidback charm harmoniously matches the intrinsic star quality of #Joshlia’s other half, Julia Barretto. Together, the two make a candidly endearing tandem, oozing just the right amount of sweetness and authenticity to enthrall an entire crowd.

Looking past what we see on screen, what’s truly magnetizing about the budding actor is his unfazed take on life despite living under the spotlight. He remains to be the affable, albeit admittedly sleepy, Joshua Garcia we’ve admired since day one. Gracious to the people who support him, Joshua stops by to take photos and wave back to his fans as we shot him in layers of clothes under the scorching heat of the Manila sun. After finally wrapping up an exhausting but worthwhile shoot, we sit back with the rising star as he shared with us the best career advice he’s heard, the one person he admires, and what terrifies him most as an actor.

How was your experience being the lead actor in a movie?
My first lead is in Vince and Kath and James. Pero at the same time masaya din. Siyempre ang dami namin sa showbiz eh pero kami ni Julia [Barretto] yung nabigyan ng pagkakataon na gumawa ng pelikula with the Hugot Queen herself, Direk Antoinette Jadaone.

How has your chemistry with Julia changed since the first time you worked together on Vince & Kath & James?
Inatake kasi namin yung Vince & Kath & James na parang young love, bagets, pa-tweetums. Ito kasing Love You to the Stars and Back, ang atake namin dito is more mature, more serious.

Who do you look up to in the industry?
John Lloyd Cruz talaga. Kahit ano pang issue yung dumating sa kanya, kahit ano pang mangyari o kahit anong gawin niyang kalokohan, siya talaga yung magiging idol ko eh. Walang makakapantay sa kanya. Yun yung pagiging totoong fan, kung baga.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?
Kay Inang, kay Olivia M. Lamasan. Sabi niya sakin na, “never stop learning.” Tapos may nabasa ako about it, sabi, “If you stop learning, you start dying.”

What’s one thing you learned from your PBB experience that you still carry with you until now?
Yung pagiging totoo siguro.

What’s the most challenging part about being an actor?
Magandang tanong yan ah. Ang trabaho kasi ng actor para sa akin is to entertain the people.

What do you love most about acting?
Yung marami akong naiimpluwensiyahang tao. Through acting, I can express what I feel. At the same time, nakakapag portray din ako ng iba’t ibang character. May nalalaman akong bagong pain, may nalalaman akong bagong problema.

Who would you want to work with next for a project?
Kung sa director, si Direk Erik Matti. Tapos actor, John Lloyd, always.

Where do you draw inspiration for acting?
Kung baga si Caloy from Love You to the Stars and Back, kailangan sa kanya manggagaling yung pain.

You’ve come a long way since PBB. What keeps you grounded?
The people around me. Friends, family, handler, road manager, lahat sila.

How do you deal with negativity that comes your way?

What’s your dream role?
Yung ginawa ni Sean Penn sa I Am Sam, parang ganun.

Baka hindi ko sila mapa-bilib sa performance ko—that’s the challenge for me.

If you weren’t an actor, what would you be doing now?
Siguro pumapasok ako, tapos culinary yung course ko.

What have you learned so far about being in the industry?
Yung maging totoo, parang yun na talaga.

Aside from acting, what do you enjoy doing?
Alam mo ngayon, I enjoy watching movies—maganda man o pangit. Yung nao-observe mo kasi, pwede mong gamitin. Halimbawa, ito, kukunin ko ‘to. Itong ganito, pwede kong gamitin. Yung pago-observe, maganda siya sa trabahong ‘to.

Moving on to fashion, how would you describe your personal style?
Kailangan palagi may jacket kasi walang muscle yung braso ko eh, puro taba. Para maitago yung katabaan ko(Laughs)

Do you work out?
No, pero may sports naman ako. Badminton and basketball, pero more on badminton.

Do you have any fashion inspirations?
Gusto ko yung style ni Logan Lerman. Parang rugged lang.

For you, what’s the most important thing when it comes to dressing up?

What are 3 grooming products you use everyday?

How do you take care of your skin?
Nagpapa-derma ako once in a while, that’s how I take care of my skin. Para maiwasan ang breakout.

What’s one accessory every guy should have?
Phone. Or cap. I’m comfortable with wearing a cap para di ko na iisipin na kailangan kong ayusin buhok ko.

What’s next for Joshua Garcia?
Meron akong project ngayon, The Good Son. Palabas na siya sa Primetime Bida. Ako dun si Joseph Reyes, And then meron kaming upcoming soap ni Julia. Abangan na lang natin.

Are you planning to venture out from acting?
