When you’re a 20-something-year-old girl living in 2017, there’s nothing wrong with wanting all the best things in life: newly-polished nails every 2 weeks, a Starbucks coffee in hand every morning, and a credit card at your convenience. But all these things come with a price—and it’s costing you a chance to have a better life in the future.
While it’s okay to spend your hard-earned money, it’s important to save a portion of your salary. If you’ve come to realize that you have a spending problem or you’ve recently asked yourself, “Where did all my money go,” it’s time to stop breaking the bank and start adding to your savings account. Below, see the 7 things every girl spends too much on and how to save money instead:
1. Dining Out
It’s easy to order food that’s already made for you but you’ll realize how much money you can save when you start bringing homemade food to work. Save the food delivery orders for dinner with your friends on weekends instead.
Cut down on your daily coffee and save yourself some money and calories. Here are a few alternatives: drink water with lemon, green tea, fruit smoothies, apple cider vinegar, or eat an apple. These will not only give your morning a boost but also feed your body with vitamins and antioxidants.
3. Beauty Maintenance
I get it, looking fabulous helps you gain confidence. But you don’t need to visit the hair and nail salons every 3 weeks to feel pretty. Ever heard of DIY? Buy yourself a classic nail polish and spend the weekends retouching your nails or create your own hair mask and bring the salon to your home instead. That’s what google is for. (wink)
It’s hard to resist a fashionable trend that everyone is going crazy for. But seriously, how many Kylie Cosmetics lipsticks do you need and will you really wear that trendy piece 5 years later? (Ahem, wedge sneakers.)
5. Plastic Water Bottles
Admit it: you’d rather buy a plastic water bottle that you can easily throw out than to bring your own refillable bottle to carry around everyday. But add up all those receipts and you’d wish you bought your own refillable water bottle instead. Plus, it’s never too late to help save the environment!
6. Postpaid Subscriptions
You’re spending 2000 pesos a month to pay your phone bill while also paying for monthly subscriptions like Spotify and a gym you hardly even go to. Ask yourself, do you really need both Netflix and iflix? For a start, try cutting out the one you use the least.
We hear you, walking or lining up at the shuttle, bus, or MRT station during peak hours is the worst situation ever. Taking an Uber or a Grab taxi is a constant temptation because it’s so much easier and faster. But if you tallied up your monthly expense on Uber, you’d probably be forced to rethink your choices. But hey, Uber Pool is still an option.
