10 Things You Can’t Miss During Art Fair Philippines 2017

Art Fair Philippines is here once again. And for its 5th year, you can expect a bigger, better, and bolder set of curated pieces to be displayed. To help you witness and fully experience the best of contemporary art, we’re here to give you a list of the things you you should put in your itinerary. From February 16 to 19, the most-awaited affair will fuel things up in the city of Makati—showcasing the finest pieces of art from 34 local galleries as well as 12 international galleries.

To add to the excitement, the team behind the fair is launching 10 Days of Art from February 9 to 19 that will feature a series of events, special exhibits, tours, talks, and after parties around Makati involving galleries, museums, bars, restaurants, and retail establishments.

So if you’re looking to maximize your Art Fair experience this year, take a look at all the things you can’t miss:

James Nares Street

James Nares’ “Street”

What: The painter and filmmaker, James Nares, will bring his breathtaking work of art entitled “Street”. A 61-minute video of capturing the people in New York in slow-motion, this masterpiece was highly-recognized and was shown in Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Saint Louis Art Museum and Connecticut’s the Wadsworth Museum of Art. The British-born artist will also have a talk at the Link on February 16.
When: Wednesday, February 15 to Sunday, February 19, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Charlie Co’s “Bombardment”

What: Known from representing the Philippines in various exhibitions internationally, this renowned visual artist is recognized by his surreal interpretation of current events. Watching Charlie with his public art will be an unforgettable visual feast.

Xyza Cruz Bacani’s “Humans of Makati”

What: This street photographer is considered to be a true rising star as she embodies bravery and compassion by taking photos of the lives of the people in Makati in a deeper and meaningful way. She has been featured in CNN and New York Times’ Lens Blog because of her skills in street photography and her story as an Overseas Filipino Worker.

Pete Jimenez’ “Sampaguita” Installation

What: A creative and quick-witted mind can really work wonders. Pete Jimenez – a Filipino sculptor –proves to us how he can form whimsical sculptures made of metal FROM scrap materials.

Dr. Sarah Thornton “Artworlds”

What: She is a sociologist and writer of the bestselling books “Seven Days in the Art World” and “33 Artists in Three Acts”. Dr. Sarah Thornton will talk about the globalized art world, the significance of art, her researches and books, and many more.

What: Be alive and proud to see street performances unlike any other. This art of street theater embodies the beauty of buskers who create a dynamic and collaborative experience with the people.

Silent Disco

What: Have you ever raved wearing wireless headphones? It is impossible not to dance away with the sound of experimental music wherever you are in the venue – well, if you haven’t been in one then this is your chance as 6 local and international DJs battle it out against to participate in the famed Malasimbo Music Festival.
When: Saturday, February 18, 8 to 11 p.m.

Art Fair Exhibits

What: This year’s art gallery will have an additional floor with more participating local galleries such as 1335 Mabini and Artinformal as well as more exhibitors from Southeast Asia. Internationally established artists like Jose Tence Ruiz, Agnes Arellano, Dex Fernandez, and Patricia Perez Eustaquio will also display interactive and stimulating artworks at the main exhibit.
